French President Francois Hollande is taking part in the Victory Day celebrations in Paris, honoring the victory over Nazism in World War II, local media reported Sunday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – French President Francois Hollande is taking part in the Victory Day celebrations at the Arc de Triomphe, one of the world's best-known commemorative monuments in Paris, marking the end of World War II in Europe, local media reported Sunday.

Later in the day, Hollande is also expected to lay a wreath at the monument of General Charles de Gaulle.

​After the official ceremonies on the 71st anniversary of victory over fascism, the famous boulevard leading to the Arc de Triomphe, the Avenue des Champs-Elysees will become pedestrian-only zone for the first Sunday in the month, according to Le Monde.

The initiative was put forward by Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo in early January.
