The Belgian State Security Service director warned of new Daesh attacks in the country.

BRUSSELS (Sputnik) — Terrorist attacks by Daesh may recur in Belgium, the country's State Security Service Director Jaak Raes said Wednesday.

"Daesh is something that keeps us awake. In the longer term we can possibly expect more attacks," Raes said, as quoted by the Belga news agency.

At the same time, the security chief warned against increased polarization and the rise of far-right sentiments.

"A new polarization may be coming. Consider the Pegida marches, think of violent reactions from the extreme right," he said.

Belgium has been increasingly exposed to the risk of terrorism in the wake of the November 13 attacks in Paris. Many of the attack perpetrators were Belgian citizens of North African origin.

The country's authorities maintain the security threat level at level 3, one notch below maximum, which was issued in the wake of the late March terrorist attacks that struck the departure hall of the Brussels Airport. On the same day, another explosion hit the Maelbeek metro station near the headquarters of the EU institutions in Brussels. Over 30 people died and at least 300 were killed in the attacks.

Daesh, which is an extremist jihadist group outlawed in many countries, including Russia, has claimed responsibility for both the Paris and Brussels attacks.
