ECHR Orders Ankara to Pay $1.1Mln to Opposition Cumhuriyet Party

The European Court of Human Rights obliged Ankara to pay more than 1 million euros to the opposition Republican People's Party for violating the principle of freedom of assembly.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) ruled on Tuesday that Ankara must pay 1 million euros ($1.1 million) to the opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) in compensation for violating the principle of freedom of assembly.

"In today’s Chamber judgment in the case of Cumhuriyet Halk Partisi v. Turkey the European Court of Human Rights held, unanimously, that there had been: a violation of Article 11 (freedom of assembly and association) of the European Convention on Human Rights. The Court held that Turkey was to pay the applicant party 1,085,800 euros (EUR) in respect of pecuniary damage and EUR 5,000 for costs and expenses," the ECHR said in a press release.

​According to the statement, the case concerned the confiscation of a substantial part of the assets of Turkey’s main opposition party CHP, by the Constitutional Court following an inspection of its accounts for the years 2007 to 2009.
