The renaming of a business center on the outskirts of the Indian capital has sent Twitter users abuzz.

The Indian city #Gurugram, formerly known as Gurgaon, has been trending on Twitter since Tuesday evening. Twitter users are still wondering why the government wasted time and money on the name change and are questioning the reasons behind this switch, suggesting alternate names for other cities and playing with rhymes and references to Instagram. Check out some of the tweets:

Alas, people who live in Gurgaon — Gurgaonites, shall now be referred to as Gurugramites.

Gurgaon is a city in the Indian state of Haryana. Popularly known as Millennium City, it has become a leading financial and industrial hub with the third highest per capita income in India. The state government announced that it will rename the city of Gurgaon to Gurugram to satisfy the demand of locals.

According to a legend, Gurgaon was derived from the name of Guru Dronacharya, a master of archery in Mahabharata, a Sanskrit epic poem. The village was given as a gurudakshina (gift) to him by his students — the legendary rulers Pandavas and Kauravas — and came to be known as Gurugram, literally meaning "village of the Guru", which over time became distorted to Gurgaon.
