US, China to Boost Travelling Between Countries

The United States and China are planning high-level negotiations in Beijing this week to discuss steps to protect visitors and boost travel between the two nations, the US Department of State announced in a press release on Monday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs Michele Bond will represent the United States in negotiations on Tuesday, according to the release.

"The Consular Dialogue will focus on efforts to protect citizens and to facilitate legitimate travel, and will highlight the valuable economic and cultural interaction between our two countries."

More than two million residents of the United States visit China each year, about half for sightseeing and leisure, the Chinese government said on an official website.

Another quarter of the two million US visitors travel for business meetings, while the remainder visits friends, family or come to China for work.

Likewise, the number of Chinese visitors to the United States tops two million per year, according to the US Department of Commerce.

Bond’s visit to Beijing coincides with the kickoff of the 2016 US-China Tourism year according to People’s Daily.

On Tuesday, US President Barack Obama will be featured in a video posted on the US Embassy website promoting visits to the United States.
