A fire engulfed a temple in India killing over 100 people during celebrations ahead of the Malayalam New Year.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed condolences to Indian President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the temple blaze that killed more than 100 people, the Kremlin press service said in a statement Sunday.

Earlier in the day, a fire broke out at the shrine during celebrations ahead of the Malayalam New Year on April 14. Over 300 were wounded in the blast in the firework stockpile, which destroyed the building.

"The Russian head of state expressed condolences and support to the families and friends of killed people, wished a speedy recovery to the injured," the statement said.
