PALMYRA (Syria) (Sputnik) – Russian specialists examined about 20 hectares of land in the historic Syrian city of Palmyra on the first day of demining work, a Russian Defense Ministry spokesman informed.

In total, terrorists planted bombs over a territory of 180 hectares in Palmyra, but the Russian side "does not exclude that with the start of demining [over this territory] this data will be corrected to reflect an increase," Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov said.

On March 27, the Syrian army, backed by militias and Russian Aerospace Forces, fully liberated Palmyra, which was under the control of the Islamic State (Daesh) jihadist group, also known as Daesh, since May 2015.

Russia has deployed several groups of specialists and de-mining robots to assist Syrian experts in clearing bombs and land mines left by Daesh militants in their retreat from the historic city.

On Wednesday, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that the Syrian forces with assistance from Russian specialists had destroyed over 1,500 explosive devices during demining operations in Palmyra.
