EU Parliamentary Committee Proposes to Revise Bloc's Asylum Claim Scheme
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The Dublin Regulation, signed by all EU members, stipulates that the first EU member country entered by a refugee is responsible for processing their asylum application. After the migration crisis escalated, some EU countries called for the system to be amended as it leads to a disproportionate amount of migrants in peripheral EU member states that cannot handle the influx.

The European Commission is likely to suggest a modest change into the existing system of asylum application to provide the countries mostly affected by the migrant crisis with EU assistance, the BBC reported.

The broadcaster added that the second option would be the cancellation of the Dublin Regulation system and redistribution of asylum seekers around Europe.

Europe has been beset by a massive refugee crisis, with hundreds of thousands of undocumented migrants fleeing their home countries in the Middle East and North Africa to escape violence and poverty. The majority of migrants and asylum seekers arrives in the European Union by sea, entering the Mediterranean nations such as Greece and Italy.
