BAKU (Sputnik) — Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev vowed on Saturday that his nation would continue looking for a peaceful solution to its dispute with Armenia over the Nagorno-Karabakh region.

"We will continue efforts aimed at a peaceful resolution of the conflict. But the solution to the conflict must respect Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity," Aliyev said at a nuclear security summit.

Tensions between neighboring Armenia and Azerbaijan over the Armenian-held mountainous area in Azerbaijan flared after both nations accused each other of violating the 1994 ceasefire.

Speaking at the global summit in Washington, the Azerbaijani president accused Armenia of setting conditions for "liberating" what he claimed was an "occupied territory" and suggested that four UN Security Council resolutions on Nagorno-Karabakh were observed only on paper.

"These resolutions stipulate that Armenian armed forces be immediately and unconditionally withdrawn from our territory. However, the occupation of our lands has continued for over 20 years," Aliyev said.
