MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The airstrikes took place in northern Iraq's Kirkuk and Nineveh governorates, according to Sky News Arabia.
Mosul, Iraq's second largest city, remains under Daesh control amid an ongoing offensive by the Iraqi army. Daesh is a militant jihadist organization operating in Syria and Iraq. It is outlawed in many countries, including Russia.
The US-led coalition of more than 60 nations has been carrying out airstrikes against Daesh, first in Iraq and later Syria since 2014 — albeit without the approval of the Syrian government or the UN Security Council.
