Nigeria’s armed forces liberated more than 800 civilians from the Islamist group Boko Haram's captivity in the country’s northeast, the Nigerian army said in a statement Thursday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – An additional 520 hostages were freed in Kusumma village where one Boko Haram fighter was captured alive and three others killed.

"The triumphant troops, apart from killing 22 terrorists, cleared pockets of terrorists in Wumbi, Tunish, Tilem and Malawaji. Others are the Makaudari, Daima, Buduli, Sadigumo, Jiwe, Sidigeri and Kala villages. The troops also rescued 309 persons held captive by the terrorists," the army said.

The counterterrorism raid reportedly took place on the same day the militants captured 14 women and two girls in the state of Adamawa.

During its six-year insurgency, Boko Haram has killed approximately 20,000 people and displaced as many as 2.5 million in Nigeria.
