"In the face of these acts of terrorism the United States stands in strong solidarity with our ally Belgium," Carter stated. "We also stand ready to provide assistance to our friends and allies in Europe."
Earlier on Tuesday, a series of blasts hit Brussels' Zaventem airport and a city-center metro station, killing at least 34 people and injuring almost 200 others. The Belgian authorities are treating the explosions as part of a coordinated terrorist attack.
Carter added that the United States condemned Tuesday morning’s bombings and stands in solidarity with Belgium.
US Secretary of State John Kerry said in a statement that the US Embassy in Brussels is trying to account for the wellbeing of all American citizens and will provide whatever support the Belgian government may require.
