MOSCOW (Sputnik) — A French citizen was killed Sunday during a gun attack at a breach resort town in the Ivory Coast, in West Africa, the French foreign office has confirmed.
"One of our compatriots has been killed," the statement reads. "Every effort is being taken to identify the victims and their nationality. The process of verification is being coordinated with Ivorian authorities."
Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara said after visiting the site of the attack that a total of 22 people had been killed including two security officers and six gunmen.
The attackers targeted three hotels at the Grand-Bassam resort, close to the city of Abidjan. The shooting started in the early afternoon. Ivorian Interior Minister Hamed Bakayoko said defense and security forces soon intervened and were able to neutralize the gunmen.
