MEXICO CITY (Sputnik) — According to the El Heraldo news portal, the riot occurred at the central Francisco Morazan department of the Renaciendo detainment center. At least two people were injured during the riot, after which they were taken to hospital, the media reported.
According to other media reports, a law enforcement officer was wounded as police tried to restore order inside the prison.
Honduras is the country that has the highest murder rate in the world. The country has 24 penal institutions, which are able to accommodate some 8,000 people, but in fact they house a much larger number of people.
Inside major Honduran prisons, members of the gangs, which dominate swathes of the nation, are housed in separate prison blocks and riots between them arise from time to time.
