EU Publishes Extension of Sanctions for Ukrainian Officials, Ex-President

The European Council extended by one year "asset freezes against 16 people identified as responsible for the misappropriation of Ukrainian state funds or for the abuse of office causing a loss to Ukrainian public funds," according to official statement.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The Official Journal of the European Council published on Saturday the legal acts regarding the EU decision to extend sanctions against 16 Ukrainian officials for one more year over the mismanagement of the country’s state budget.

On Friday, the European Council said in a statement that it had extended by one year "asset freezes against 16 people identified as responsible for the misappropriation of Ukrainian state funds or for the abuse of office causing a loss to Ukrainian public funds." All people on the list have proceedings launched against them at home by Ukrainian authorities.

The decision is due to take effect on Sunday.

Brussels imposed sanctions against a number of Ukrainian citizens who are considered responsible for the theft of state funds on March 5, 2014, freezing assets and issuing visa bans. The list was extended in the following year.

The 2015 list included Ukraine’s former President Viktor Yanukovych and his son Oleksandr, a businessman.
