Germany has become a key destination for hundreds of thousands of refugees and migrants fleeing war and poverty in the Middle East and North Africa since the start of 2015. Last year, nearly five times more refugees were registered than in 2014, according to the German Interior Ministry’s estimates.
The National Democratic Party was established in 1964, and currently has almost 6,000 members. The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution defines it as a right-wing and extremist organization.
In 2001, the government tried unsuccessfully to officially ban the party.
