After US presidential candidate Donald Trump blasted German Chancellor Angela Merkel for her policies regarding the ongoing refugee crisis in Europe, the influential German news magazine Der Spiegel slammed the Republican billionaire, calling his campaign “madness.”

The high-profile weekly magazine used a picture of the tycoon-turned politician on the cover of the most recent issue, where he is depicted against a background of a burning “stars and stripes” flag.

The headline of the article can be translated to English as: “Madness: America’s Agitator Donald Trump,” apparently in reference to the reality television show producer’s recent verbal attacks on the German leader.

Delivering a speech at a rally in the US on January 11, Trump declared that he should have been named Time Magazine’s Person of the Year, rather than Merkel, and went on to make claims about the chancellor's character and legacy.

The wealthy Republican presidential candidate claimed that crime levels in Germany have surged since the beginning of refugee crisis. Trump suggested that German citizens are ready to take to the streets in open revolution to topple the country’s leader and her administration.
