WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Ten of 93 remaining detainees at the Guantanamo Bay detention facility in Cuba face criminal charges in the United States, while the rest of the inmates are eligible for transfer, White House spokesman Josh Earnest told reporters, according to a pool report.
The Obama administration has enough evidence to prosecute the ten detainees, while 34 have been reviewed and deemed safe for transfer, Earnest said on Thursday.
The number of detainees peaked at 779 under the George W. Bush administration and stood at 242 when Barack Obama took office, Earnest noted.
Every detainee transferred has been vetted by a review board and the secretary of defense, who gives the US Congress 30 days advance notice, Earnest pointed out.
The prisoners released on Thursday are headed to Oman, which has a rehabilitation program they can participate in, Ernest concluded.
