MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The Afghan forces have retaken control of the Darqad district in north of the country almost three months after it fell to the Taliban militants, Afghanistan's interior ministry said on Sunday.
In late October, the Taliban militants captured Darqad, in the northeastern border province of Takhar, making the Afghan security forces to "retreat for tactical reasons." The national security forces launched an intense operation to retake Darqad district on Friday.
"During the operation, more than 30 armed insurgents were killed and injured and nine people were captured," the ministry said in a statement.
At least two Afghan security forces members were injured during the operation, according to the ministry.
Afghanistan is suffering from the activity of the Taliban, a militant group formed in the 1990s. The insurgents are seeking to establish sharia law in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and are also known to have been behind numerous deadly terror attacks in both countries.
Afghan security forces regularly conduct military operations against Taliban fighters. Takhar is among the provinces where armed militants are currently actively operating.
