West to Return to Confrontation With Russia After Joint Anti-Terror Efforts

Though Russia hopes that joint anti-terror actions will incite greater cooperation within the international community, Washington and Brussels will eventually get back to their confrontation policies toward Moscow, the International Peace Bureau’s (IPB) co-president told Sputnik on Thursday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik), Svetlana Alexandrova – On Wednesday, Russian Permanent Representative to the United Nations Vitaly Churkin announced Russia had submitted a renewed draft UN Security Council resolution on the coordination of efforts in the fight against terrorism.

"Russia believes that it is a way to reintegrate into the international community. This will not work. They [US and their allies] will use Russia as long as they need it and then they will go back to the politics of confrontation," Reiner Braun said, commenting whether the creation of a wide anti-ISIL coalition, comprising the European Union, the United States, Russia and Iran could reshape the current political situation and contribute to a thaw among the countries.

Syria has been mired in a civil war since 2011, with government forces loyal to Assad fighting a number of militant groups, including the ISIL and the Nusra Front.

The US-led coalition of some 60 states has been carrying out airstrikes against ISIL positions in Syria and Iraq since 2014, without the approval of the United Nations or the Syrian government.

Russia continues its air campaign against the ISIL in Syria, commenced on September 30 at the request of President Bashar Assad.

On Monday, French President Francois Hollande called for a broad coalition including the United States and Russia to tackle ISIL after the jihadists claimed responsibility for the Paris attacks that saw 129 people killed last week.
