Slovenes have crossed the Croatian border while constructing a border fence aimed at countering the influx of migrants seeking asylum in Europe, the Croatian Interior Minister said Wednesday.

BELGRADE (Sputnik) — Slovenian soldiers started to construct a razor wire fence along its border with Croatia on Wednesday morning.

"Rapid reaction forces of our police were sent there. We will just warn them that they entered the Croatian territory and must remove the fence. If they do not do this, we will first sent an official note and then remove the fence physically," Ranko Ostojic said as quoted by the Croatian Vecernji list newspaper, commenting on the incident.

According to the news outlet, the Croatian side asked the Slovenian side to retreat the disputable place.

Official Zagreb expects the fence to be removed from contested sites of the border on Thursday.

Earlier this week, Slovenian Prime Minister Miro Cerar announced his government's decision to build "temporary technical barriers" on the border with Croatia over the next few days to tackle illegal migration.

The European Union is currently struggling to manage a massive refugee crisis, with hundreds of thousands of people leaving conflict-torn countries in the Middle East and North Africa for Europe.
