The EU move to label foods produced in Israeli-occupied territories is a small step in the right direction, the head of European Middle East Project (EUMEP) NGO told Sputnik on Wednesday.

JERUSALEM (Sputnik) – Earlier in the day, the European Commission approved a motion to introduce obligatory labeling on foods made in Israeli-occupied territories. Foods produced there will not be marked as "Made in Israel," but will carry a different label.

"The labelling guidelines are a small and overdue step in the right direction. The EU and its member states should take further measures to differentiate between Israel and the illegal settlements. This is the most practical way for the EU to help preserve the possibility of a two-state solution," Martin Konecny said.

Palestine Praises EU Over Decision to Label Food From Israel-Occupied Lands
The Palestinian leadership has praised the move, while the Israeli authorities have called it hypocritical and anti-Jewish.

Israel seized Syria’s Golan Heights region and Palestinian territories of East Jerusalem, West Bank and the Gaza Strip during the Six-Day War in 1967.

Israel has continued to build settlements in the occupied territories, prompting condemnation from the United Nations.
