CHISINAU (Sputnik) — Cimpeanu's appointment was announced at a briefing on Thursday.
Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta resigned on Wednesday following mass protests across the country. Later in the day, some 25,000 protesters gathered in the Romanian capital to demand dissolution of the parliament and snap legislative election.
On Tuesday, about 25,000 people gathered in the center of Bucharest, calling for the government to take responsibility for a fire at a nightclub that left 32 people dead. It is believed the tragedy was exacerbated by safety regulation violations.
The Romanian president has started consultations on forming a new government with the heads of Romania's political parties.
