Slovakia Opposes Quota System as Means to Tackle Refugee Crisis
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Slovakia intends to sue the European Union over bloc refugee redistribution quotas, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said Wednesday.

On Tuesday, EU interior ministers approved a plan to redistribute 120,000 refugees throughout the bloc according to a quota system proposed by the European Commission.

"Slovakia is a sovereign country and it is a dictate of the majority [implementation of quota system] in a very sensitive issue," Fico said.

Slovakia is required, under quotas mandated by the European Commission, to adopt almost 2,300 refugees under the new refugee resettlement plan.

Europe is currently facing a severe refugee crisis. European Commission estimates some 500,000 people from the Middle East and North Africa have arrived in the European Union since the beginning of 2015, seeking asylum.
