NEW YORK (Sputnik) — The New York Police Department (NYPD) is investigating numerous shootings that left at least eight people dead over the weekend, Mayor Bill de Blasio stated on Monday.
"We had a tough night overnight," de Blasio said. "I am absolutely convinced the NYPD is going to find the perpetrators in these cases."
According to the NYPD, the violence began early on Saturday morning when three men were shot and killed in the borough of Brooklyn. Five other people were killed in separate shootings that took place across the city.
"It appears to be criminals against criminals," de Blasio added. "That doesn’t make it any more acceptable, but it appears to be a group going after each other."
As of Monday afternoon, the NYPD has yet to make a single arrest stemming from the shootings.
New York City has seen at least ten more murders to date this year compared to last year, according to the NYPD.
