About 3,000 refugees arrived at the Hungarian-Austrian border by Thursday, Austrian newspaper Kronen Zeitung reported.

VIENNA, September 10 (Sputnik) — The daily cited local police as saying that between midnight and 3 a.m. local time (22:00 to 01:00 GMT) over 1,700 people arrived at the Nickelsdorf border crossing, in Austria's easternmost state of Burgenland.

"We do not know for how many [more refugees] we have to prepare ourselves," Deputy National Police Director, Christian Stella, was quoted as saying.

Austrian authorities have been sending the refugees to the capital, where some board trains to the border city of Salzburg, as the vast number of people want to get to Germany.

According to European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, some 500,000 people have arrived in Europe since the beginning of 2015, many from conflict-torn Syria and Libya.

Earlier this week, European Commission (EC) spokesman Alexander Winterstein said that the EC would allocate 5 million euros ($5.6 million) to Austria, to help the country deal with asylum, migration and refugee integration.
