MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The United Kingdom will use its foreign aid budget to support councils when the Syrian refugees arrive to the country, Chancellor George Osborne said Sunday.
Earlier this week, British Prime Minister David Cameron said that the United Kingdom would take in and resettle thousands of Syrian refugees, despite the country’s original pledge to admit only 1,000 refugees.
Europe is struggling to deal with an unprecedented migrant crisis, as hundreds of thousands attempted to enter Europe in a bid to flee war and violence in the Middle East and North Africa.
According to the EU border agency Frontex, over 340,000 refugees and migrants illegally crossed the European Union's external borders between January and July 2015, which is three times higher than during the same period of the previous year.
