MOSCOW (Sputnik) — An armed 14-year-old US teenager held several students and a teacher hostage inside high school in West Virginia before releasing his captives and surrendering to law enforcement without incident, local police said.
West Virginia State police office received Tuesday an emergency call "in reference to a person with a gun at Philip Barbour High School. Numerous law enforcement agencies and fire departments responded to the scene," the police department said on its Facebook page.
"After initial negotiations, the suspect agreed to release all of the hostages," state police noted, adding that during further talks the boy agreed to put the gun down and surrendered to police.
The teenager was sent to a local hospital for evacuation.
The investigation into his motive for taking hostages is currently underway, the police stressed, adding that discussions will be held with the Prosecuting Attorney to determine the appropriate course of action once the suspect is released from the hospital.
