Earlier today, while addressing a military parade in Kiev to celebrate Ukraine’s Independence Day, Poroshenko compared the Donbass region in Eastern Ukraine with Mordor, the fictional evil country in Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings series.
“Novorossiya [the historical term to describe the entire southeastern part of Ukraine] is the Tolkien myth called Mordor,” the president said.
Well, Tolkien fans around the world should perhaps educate the Ukrainian president about the real state of affairs in the universe of Middle Earth.
“Mr. Poroshenko probably didn’t read Tolkien. In the book, it was from Mordor that armies came out to conquer neighboring lands, not vice versa,” DPR representative Brig said, who unlike Poroshenko, is a well-read man.
Brig referred to Kiev’s desire to brutally suppress local Donbass militia by invading the majority of Eastern Ukraine using its massive army, just like the armies of orcs and trolls wanted to conquer everyone in the Middle Earth. However, Poroshenko’s military operation failed after Donbass militia defeated the Ukrainian army following a series of heavy fighting.
Others disagreed with Brig’s words that Poroshenko should be reading the Lord of the Rings series.
“Petro Oleskiyovych [Poroshenko] shouldn’t be reading Tolkien, but the Minsk peace agreements,” Leonid Slutsky, the Chairman of the Russian State Duma Committee on the CIS, said on his Twitter account.
Slutsky might be right. Although the two fighting sides in Ukraine signed a deal in the Belarusian capital Minsk, promising ceasefire, Donbass militia reported truce violations from the Kiev army numerous times.
