Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders has tweeted that he will meet with civil rights activist DeRay Mckesson and others to discuss his racial justice platform.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The move followed a warm exchange of tweet messages between the two men on Monday.

Sanders tweeted in reply:

The meeting could prove important for Sanders, a self-proclaimed Socialist from the rural, almost totally white state of Vermont in the US Northeast.

Most US political observers have expressed skepticism that Sanders could successfully extend his appeal beyond the wealthy, white, upper middle-class base he has attracted on the East and West coasts.

However, Sanders confounded skeptics by showing his appeal at the Iowa State Fair on Sunday where he edged out Democratic presidential frontrunner Hillary Clinton in a straw poll of more than 1,000 people.

Sanders has said that he also wants to reach out to the almost 40-million-strong African American community after two his events were interrupted by raucous protestors from the Black Lives Matter movement, of which Mckesson is a leader.

On Monday, the Politico newspaper reported that Clinton courted Mckesson for his support in June 2015.

However, the paper also noted that that same month, Mckesson tweeted his approval of Sanders’ powerful statements on race, police reform and employment.
