At least eight people were injured after a grenade exploded outside a mosque prayer hall in the Kashmir region in northern India on Thursday, India’s NDTV reported, citing a police official.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The blast occurred in the Shopian district in the morning when people were coming out of the mosque after prayers.

"People found a glass-like object near a shoe rack outside the main prayer hall of the mosque. When one of them tried to remove it, the grenade kept under it exploded," the police official told NDTV.

The injured have been immediately hospitalized, according to the broadcaster.

Earlier in the day, a similar explosive device was found in the same district and defused by police.

On Wednesday, several unidentified militants hurled a grenade at the Indian security forces, patrolling the Srinagar district of the state of Jammu and Kashmir.

Jammu and Kashmir state is a Muslim-majority province with a strong separatist movement and increasing Islamist sentiment.
