MOSCOW (Sputnik) — A gunman who conducted a deadly hostage-taking in 2014 in a Sydney cafe suffered from chronic schizophrenia, his consulting psychiatrist told an inquest Wednesday, according to local media reports.
According to The Sydney Morning Herald, psychiatrist Kristen Barrett, who started treating Monis in 2010, told the inquest she had prescribed pharmaceuticals for Monis, who had "delusional" ideas of being constantly watched by Iranian and Australian intelligence, even in the bathroom.
The medication appeared to improve his mental condition, according to the doctor, but in early 2011 he stopped taking pills and a few months later stopped attending therapeutic sessions with Barrett.
