Russia has sent more humanitarian aid to the crisis-torn Donbas region as a convoy of more than 100 vehicles left a rescue center in southern Russia for southeastern Ukraine, a spokesperson for Russia's Ministry of Emergency Situations said Thursday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — According to the ministry, the convoy is carrying more than 1.1 tons of humanitarian aid, including food, essential supplies, building materials, as well as textbooks for schoolchildren and students.

"The convoy will split in two approximately equal parts before the state border, one will proceed to the Donetsk region, while the other will move on to the Luhansk region," the spokesperson said.

The latest aid delivery is the 26th in a series of convoys sent by Russia to provide humanitarian relief to the self-proclaimed republics of Luhansk and Donetsk, that have witnessed a year-long armed conflict between the Kiev forces and local militia.

Overall, Russia has delivered some 33 tons of humanitarian aid to Donbas since August 2014.

In March, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that Russian humanitarian convoys remained the only source of survival for the residents of Donbas.
