A 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Japanese island of Honshu, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — According to the USGS, the quake occurred at 21:23 GMT on Tuesday, 12 miles north-east of the Ofunato city in Iwate Prefecture.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage. Tsunami warning was not issued.

Honshu is the largest island of the Japanese archipelago. It is divided into five regions and it contains 34 prefectures. Honshu also contains Japan's largest cities, including Tokyo.

Japan had experienced over 900 aftershocks after the magnitude 9.0 earthquake on March 11, 2011 with about 60 aftershocks being over magnitude 6.0 and three over magnitude 7.0.

The country experiences approximately 400 earthquakes every day, although the vast majority are shindo scale "0" or less and detectable only using specialist apparatus.
