WASHINGTON (Sputnik) US President Barack Obama commemorated the 40 million people who died in Europe during World War II and called on today's generation not to allow hatred and bigotry to thrive, on Victory in Europe Day (VE Day), Friday.

"Let's stand united with our allies, in Europe and beyond, on behalf of our common values — freedom, security, democracy, human rights, and the rule of law around the world — and against bigotry and hatred in all their forms so that we give meaning to that pledge: 'Never forget. Never again.'," Obama said in a special address on VE Day.

The US president recalled all the soldiers who fought for Europe, as well as those who were murdered in concentration camps in his address.

"This was the generation that literally saved the world — that ended the war and laid a foundation for peace," Obama stated in his address.

The WWII lasted from 1939 to 1945 and involved over 80 percent of the world's population in 61 countries. Some 70 million people are believed to have perished in the conflict.
