MPs from Slovakia's National Council overwhelmingly adopted a special declaration Thursday expressing their country's gratitude to the people of the former Soviet Union for their decisive contribution in the victory over fascism.

The deputies also appealed to European heads of state to do everything possible to preserve the peace in Europe, the parliament's official website stated.

"The people of Slovakia weigh deeply the sacrifices of all soldiers and partisans, and express their deep respect for all living veterans who liberated our country from Nazism. The National Council of the Slovak Republic expresses its sincere gratitude to the people of the former Soviet Union, who put forth the greatest sacrifices, as well as to representatives of other nations and nationalities that contributed to the defeat of fascism," the text of the resolution reads.

The adoption of the text was not preceded by the traditional parliamentary discussion, and was approved by 124 out of 130 deputies present in the chamber, with six deputies abstaining.

The parliamentary press release notes that "the Slovak National Council considers the victory over Nazism and fascism in the Second World War as among the most important events in the history of the 20th Century, which must be commemorated with respect and gratitude."
