Russian deputy defense minister said that "color" revolutions, the conflict in Ukraine, as well as the advance of the Islamic State extremist group are all happening under the conditions of growing influence of information and communication technologies.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Russia equals inappropriate use of IT technologies to a threat to the national security, Deputy Defense Minister Anatoly Antonov said.

"Inappropriate use of such technologies is classified in the new military doctrine as a threat to the national security," Antonov told RIA Novosti.

Antonov said that "color" revolutions, the conflict in Ukraine, as well as the advance of the Islamic State extremist group are all happening under the conditions of growing influence of information and communication technologies.

A new Russian military doctrine was signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin in December 2014. The previous doctrine was signed back in 2010.

The new doctrine enlists the use of information and communication technologies for military and political purposes as one of the major external threats to Russia, the first threat on the list being NATO's military expansion close to Russian borders.
