MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Two Australian drug smugglers on death row were transferred from a Bali prison to an Indonesian island where they be executed, Australian ABC reported Wednesday.
According to the media outlet, Australian nationals Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran will face a firing squad shortly for plotting to smuggle heroin from Indonesia to Australia.
Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott repeatedly called on Indonesia to spare the lives of the two traffickers. Abbott told ABC Wednesday that his country was "revolted by the prospect of these executions" and "[abhorred] death penalty, which…is beneath a country such as Indonesia."
Last month, it was reported that Indonesia will proceed with the executions despite pleas of international leaders.
Sukumaran, 33, and Chan, 31, two members of the so-called Bali Nine, were convicted in 2005 for attempting to smuggle 8.3kg (18lbs) of heroin, according to media. The remaining seven members of the squad have received prison sentences of varying lengths.
