WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The ‘net neutrality’ proposal the United States Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is set to act on will continue an open internet while the United States remains the leader in internet policy making, Twitter Public Policy Manager Will Carty said in a statement.

“The United States Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is poised to act on a ‘net neutrality’ proposal that will put vital consumer and competitive protections back on the books to ensure an open Internet and continue U.S. leadership in Internet policymaking,” Carty said on Monday. “Under net neutrality principles, consumers decide which lawful content, applications, and services they want to create, access, or share with others.”

Carty believes this proposal is important, because it allows innovation in the US economic system to come from all places, which is at the core of what Twitter is.

“Empowering ‘lesser’ or historically less powerful voices to express themselves and be heard globally is at the core of Twitter’s DNA,” Carty said. Carty said that while the internet currently does this, it is important to never take for granted what this openness is all about.

“This openness promotes free and fair competition and fosters ongoing investment and innovation,” Carty said. “We need clear, enforceable, legally sustainable rules to ensure that the Internet remains open and continues to give everyone the power to create and share ideas and information instantly, without barriers.”

Twitter is one of many other companies that joined a non-profit public policy organization the Internet Association promoting internet freedom, that pushes the FCC to implement the "net neutrality" proposal, according to the statement.
