Swedish Journalist Goes Missing on ISIL-Controlled Syria-Turkey Border

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — A Swedish freelance journalist went missing in an unstable Turkish-Syrian border region controlled by Islamic State extremist group, the Swedish Expressen newspaper reported.

A man in his 30s, whose name was not mentioned, did not get in touch with anyone since Monday when he was in southeastern Turkish town of Gaziantep, the newspaper reported on Friday.

The Swedish citizen was reportedly going to cross the Turkish-Syrian border from Gaziantep, which is located about 60 miles from the largest Syria's city of Aleppo.

The journalist agreed with the Swedish embassy that they would declare him missing in case he did not call them once a day, the newspaper said.

The media considers the possibility of the reporter being abducted by ISIL.

The Islamic State radical militant group seized extensive territories in Syria and Iraq in 2014, proclaiming an Islamic caliphate in the areas under its control. The group is infamous for its cruelty, and has abducted and executed a number of foreign nationals, including journalists and aid workers.
