WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The US government mistakenly sent incorrect tax statements to 800,000 Healthcare.gov customers about their 2014 coverage, and is investigating what caused the grave error, according to Obama administration officials.

“We’re still investigating the cause. There was clearly some intermittent issue,”, Principal Deputy Administrator at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Andy Slavitt told reporters on Friday.

Healthcare.gov is the federal exchange website for the US Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, where Americans can purchase insurance if they are not covered on a policy by their business or family.

The Obama administration said the mistake could delay tax refunds for Americans who are first time customers.

Moreover, the administration said they are notifying the customers affected by the error, including the nearly 50,000 people who already filed income tax returns. The problem will not only make the 800,000 people wait longer to receive their income tax returns, but will also affect the refund amounts.

The administration said they believe the error could be tied to the way the ‘benchmark’ premium is calculated.
