NEW DELHI (Sputnik) — The Chief Elections Officer called on Delhi residents to vote in the forthcoming Delhi Legislative Assembly election, in an address to journalists Friday.
The vote will be held on Saturday to elect 70 members of the Delhi Legislative Assembly.
“I appeal to all the residents of Delhi to cast their votes. At the polling centers elaborate arrangements [have] been made. It's not only your right but also your duty to cast [your] vote,” Chandra Bhushan Kumar said.
The elections are expected to be a close race between three political parties. Bharatiya Janata Party is led by former police officer Kiran Bedi, and Aam Aadmi Party is headed by the 7th Chief Minister of Delhi Arvind Kejriwal. The third one, Indian National Congress, is led by former Minister of Housing and Poverty Alleviation Ajay Maken.
"It is very difficult to say right now which party will get how many seats. I am sure that there will be improvement in performance of [Indian National] Congress. All three parties are strong," former Delhi Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit, told reporters, commenting on the forthcoming elections.
Meanwhile, Delhi police are preparing all necessary security arrangements for a free and fair election. Some 55,000 police officers will be deployed in the Indian capital for the elections, according to the police commissioner.
Election results will be announced on February 10.
