MOSCOW (Sputnik) — RT International will broadcast the "Ferguson: Life Matters" documentary, investigating root causes of the mass protests against police brutality and racism in the United States, on Wednesday, February 4 at 8:00 p.m. EST (1:00 a.m. February 5 GMT).

On August 9, 2014, unarmed black teenager Michael Brown was shot dead in the city of Ferguson, Missouri by a white police officer, Darren Wilson. Brown's tragic death sparked large protests in Ferguson and across the United States.

According to the RT documentary, the killing of Michael Brown revealed tensions in the economically depressed and largely abandoned area that have been simmering for years.

"These areas, they used to be all white, and they used to be premier areas here and as you can see, as the businesses have left, the economy in the neighborhoods [has] gone down," activist and musician Troy Donaldson, who took part in the documentary, told RT.

Donaldson suggested that when a wealthy white population moves out, the economy of the neighborhood suffers.

"It shouldn't be that way. Just because one group leaves and one group moves out it doesn't mean the economy has to move out. The quality [of life] doesn't have to move out with it," he said.

Rodney, a furniture store worker from Ferguson, suggested to RT that the US government focuses too much of its resources on foreign affairs, ignoring the needs of their own citizens.

"They believe in helping the other people and we last. And that's real."

Mass rallies in Ferguson were reignited after a grand jury decision in November 2014 not to indict Officer Wilson in the killing of Michael Brown.
