Mitt Romney told a group of Republican donors in New York that he "wants to be president" confirming speculations that the former governor of Massachusetts is considering a third White House bid.

MOSCOW, January 10 (Sputnik) – Mitt Romney said that he wanted to be US president, but stopped short of announcing that he would participate in the 2016 presidential race, the Washington Post reports.

"I want to be president," Romney told a group of approximately 30 Republican donors gathered in New York City on Friday, as quoted by the media outlet. The story was first reported by the Wall Street Journal.

Romney’s wife now allegedly supports his decision, although she was strongly against it several months ago. In October, Ann Romney told the Los Angeles Times that her husband was not going to run for president. "Done. Completely. Not only Mitt and I are done, but the kids are done," she said, referring to her five sons. "Done. Done. Done," she repeated, as quoted by the newspaper.

The remarks come at a time when many Republican donors have already voiced their support for another top GOP contender, Jeb Bush, the former governor of Florida. This week, Bush launched a leadership PAC, known as Right to Rise, aimed at "restoring a positive, ‪‎conservative‬ philosophy to help every American get ahead," according to a post on Bush's Facebook.

Bush and Romney "contend for many of the same donors who favor pro-business candidates from the party’s establishment wing," the WSJ observed.‬‬

Spencer Zwick, Mitt Romney's former national finance co-chairman, said that the former governor of Massachusetts is considering running because "he believes he could actually make a difference," as quoted by the Washington Post. Romney is "too much of a patriot to sit on the sidelines and concede the presidency to Hillary Clinton or [Massachusetts Sen.] Elizabeth Warren when he knows that he can fix the country," he added.

Romney took part in the presidential race as a candidate from the Republican Party in 2012. He lost the general election to Barack Obama. In 2008, Romney took part in the GOP primaries but failed to secure a nomination.
