WASHINGTON, December 10 (Sputnik) – The actions of a future administration of the United States could be "very damaging" to US President Barack Obama's efforts to improve immigration system, unless the US Congress passes a comprehensive immigration reform, the president has said.
"A future administration might try to reverse some of our policies…without an actual law, an actual statute passed by Congress, it is true that theoretically a future administration could do something that I think could be very damaging," Obama said Tuesday during a meeting on immigration in Nashville, Tennessee.
"It is not likely politically that they will reverse everything that we have done, but it could be that some people then will end up in a very disadvantageous position," Obama added.
Obama's executive action on immigration, announced on November 20, aims to prevent up to five million illegal immigrants from being deported from the United States. The measure will give an opportunity to illegal immigrants who have lived in the country for more than five years and parents of children who are US citizens or legal residents to apply to stay in the United States temporarily. Applicants would have to pass a background check and pay taxes.
