MOSCOW, December 9 (Sputnik) – The London Metropolitan Police has sold the famous New Scotland Yard building to Middle Eastern investors for around £370 million ($580 million at current exchange rate), to invest funds in frontline policing, a statement published on the Mayor of London's official website said.

"Proceeds from the sale will kick-start a major investment opportunity to secure the future of the Met Police, with the funds being used to kit out officers across London with mobile technology such as tablets, smartphones and body cameras, enabling them to spend more time out on the streets," the statement read.

It is expected that the building will be demolished, and a new luxury residential and commercial development will be built in its place.

Mayor of London Boris Johnson welcomed the deal and said that the money received could now be invested in modern technologies to facilitate the fight against crime.

“The Met Police has a unique place in history and they need a home fit for the future, but police budgets are under real pressure. The sale of this under-used and outdated building means we can now not only protect that rich heritage, but also fund the new HQ and kit out bobbies with the latest mobile technology to secure the future of the force," Boris Johnson was quoted as saying in a statement on the Mayor of London website.

The New Scotland Yard building located in Victoria Street in central London has housed the Metropolitan police since 1967. The Metropolitan Police’s operational headquarters will now relocate to the refurbished Curtis Green Building on Victoria Embankment.
