MOSCOW, September 12 (RIA Novosti) - Two-thirds of Americans disapprove of the idea that web companies should pay extra charges to Internet service providers to access customers more quickly than their rivals, a survey by CALinnovates states.

"Americans want the Internet to remain free and open, and oppose efforts to allow one business to pay their way to "fast lanes," the report states.

Net neutrality relates to the assumption that all types of Web content should receive equal treatment by high-speed internet companies.

CALinnovates conducted the survey following the controversial proposals by the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to grant Internet service providers the right to charge web companies extra costs for fast delivery of content.

According to the report, the respondents resented the government having the only say in deciding how the Internet should operate and said that the final decision should reflect the interests of the consumers, business and the government.

On Wednesday, top internet companies, including Netflix, Reddit, Vimeo, Etsy, Upworthy and Digg joined an "internet slowdown" protest against the proposed regulations of the FCC and spun the "loading" symbol on their websites so as to warn the public of potential connection delays if the proposals were approved.
