MOSCOW, August 3 (RIA Novosti) – The mother of Mikhail Khodorkovsky, once Russia's richest man, has died at the age of 80, the editor-in-chief of The New Times said on Sunday.

“Marina Phillipovna Khodorkovskaya is no longer alive,” Yevgeniya Abaltz wrote in her Twitter microblog, giving no details on where Khodorkovsky’s mother died.

Marina Khodorkovsky has been seriously ill in the past years and underwent medical treatment in Berlin, where her son flew shortly after his release from prison in December 2013.

After his release, Khodorkovsky, a columnist of The New Times, gave his first interview to Abaltz.

Switzerland later issued Khodorkovsky a three-month Schengen visa. In late March, Khodorkovsky received a residence permit in the country.

Yukos founder Khodorkovsky had spent a decade in prison for fraud and tax evasion until he was pardoned.
