MOSCOW, August 28 (R-Sport) – Russian adaptive rower Natalia Bolshakova set a world record in the arms-and-shoulders women’s single sculls at the world rowing championships in Chungju, South Korea, on Wednesday, breaking the previous mark by 12 seconds and winning the gold medal.
Bolshakova, 40, who began competing in the adaptive rowing classification for athletes with arms and shoulders mobility just last year, crossed the finish in 5:13.95, well ahead of the previous record of 5:25.17, set in 2009 by Ukrainian Alla Lysenko.
Norway’s Birgit Skarstein also broke the 2009 record with her second-place finish of 5:18.79. Brazil’s Claudia Santos took bronze at 5:29.82.
The world championships wrap up on September 1.
