Donbass Donetsk goaltender Jan Laco will need surgery on his collarbone after breaking it in preseason training, head coach Julius Supler said on the team’s website Saturday.

The operation is set to take place in Slovakia, Laco’s native country.

“An x-ray was taken, the diagnosis established,” Supler said. “The surgery will be performed next Monday in Bratislava.”

Supler refused to say for how long the goaltender will be sidelined.

“I cannot say the exact date of recovery, because it is a fracture with displacement. The date will be announced after the operation.”

Laco, 30, played for various teams in the Slovak Extraliga and for Lev Poprad during its one-year spell in the KHL in the previous season. He joined Donbass after Lev failed to make it to the postseason.

Laco played nine games for Slovakia during the world championship in May, where Slovakia lost in the final to Russia. Laco was named to the All-Star Team and won the award as Best Goalkeeper of the championship.

Donbass will compete in the KHL for the first time in the coming season, starting on September 4.
